20 Mar 1987. It was the last day of winter. The PTL scandal was in full swing. Jim Bakker had freshly resigned with Jerry Falwell summarily replacing him. President Ronald Reagan was denying any US involvement in the Arms for Hostages fiasco that would later be billed as the Iran-Contra Affair. WSPZ was promoting the Bill Gaither concert the following night at The Civic Center in Atlanta. Also in town at the Omni, future Rock ‘n Roll hall of Fame inductee, Billy Joel in a sold out show (He had a second show the next night, Sunday the 22nd.) WSPZ provided free tickets to the Gaither show which I likely attended (I begun a Saturday show 1-6 pm and would have been pressed for time making it to the concert) and remember it being a note-for-note recreation of their shows the previous August in Atlanta and March, 1986 in Savannah3 times, one year. The concert featured The Bill Gaither Trio, The Gaither Vocal Band, Larnelle Harris and comedians Hicks & Cohagan. The Savannah show was courtesy of WWJD-AM, my former employer there. I was just getting my feet wet reading API news copy fresh of the ticker—aka rip and read. Errors are plentiful in my live presentation performing under the name, Jim O’Neal. This aircheck is representative of a 21 year old broadcaster’s attempt to please a highly conservative management. Overall, my performance is wooden. The music is the Christian equivalent of the easy listening formatelevator music. My comparatively hotter production style is displayed in two spots: WSPZ Christian Skate Party, and Cornerstone Sew & Vac.
